Key Concepts: Use $a = (v - u)/t$ and $v^2 = u^2 + 2as$ for straight-line motion with constant acceleration.

Section A: Acceleration

1. A car changes speed from $3\,m/s$ to $13\,m/s$ in 5 s. Calculate the acceleration. [2]

Section B: SUVAT

2. A runner starts from rest and accelerates at $2\,m/s^2$ for 20 m. Find the final speed. [3]
3. A cyclist slows from $12\,m/s$ to $4\,m/s$ over 16 m. Find the acceleration. [3]
4. A train accelerates at $1.5\,m/s^2$ for 6 s from rest. Find the final speed and distance traveled. [4]
5. A bike travels at $5\,m/s$ and accelerates at $1.0\,m/s^2$ for 8 s. Calculate the distance traveled. [3]

Mark Scheme

1. $a = (13 - 3)/5 = 2\,m/s^2$ [2]
2. $v^2 = 2as = 2 \times 2 \times 20 = 80$; $v \approx 8.9\,m/s$ [3]
3. $a = (v^2 - u^2)/2s = (4^2 - 12^2)/32 = -4\,m/s^2$ [3]
4. $v = at = 1.5 \times 6 = 9\,m/s$; $s = \tfrac{1}{2}at^2 = 0.5 \times 1.5 \times 36 = 27\,m$ [4]
5. $s = ut + \tfrac{1}{2}at^2 = 5 \times 8 + 0.5 \times 1 \times 64 = 72\,m$ [3]
